Snare Drum Reskin Service - Frequently Asked Questions

How much does snare drum reskin cost?

Our professional reskin service costs $85 for a single head (batter or resonant) in-store, or $125 for both heads. Mail-in service is $120 for single head or $160 for both heads (includes return shipping and insurance). Drum heads are Included. Total cost including service and Evans coated head ranges from $85-$125 in-store for a single head reskin.

What drum heads do you use?

We stock premium Evans coated drum heads including G1 Coated (versatile, bright tone), G2 Coated (warmer, controlled), EC2 Coated (studio, minimal overtones), and HD Dry Coated (durability, heavy hitters). All available in standard 13" and 14" snare sizes. Our drum technician can recommend the best head for your playing style, music genre, and drum shell material. You can also bring your own heads if you have specific preferences.

How long does a snare drum reskin take?

In-store reskin service typically takes 3-6 days. Simple reskins are often completed faster if we're not busy - sometimes same day or next day. For mail-in service, add 2-5 business days for shipping in each direction. Total mail-in timeline is usually 7-16 days from when you ship your drum to when it arrives back home. We'll provide specific timeframe when you drop off or book your service.

Do I need to remove the old heads before bringing my drum in?

No, please leave the old heads on. Our drum technician will remove them as part of the service. Removing heads yourself risks bearing edge damage if done incorrectly. Leaving the old heads on also allows us to inspect them for wear patterns that might indicate bearing edge problems or tuning issues. If you're shipping your drum for mail-in service, completely detension the heads (loosen all tension rods) but leave them installed.

What if you find problems with my bearing edges?

During inspection before reskinning, we check bearing edges for chips, dents, and unevenness. If we find issues, we'll contact you with photos and explain the problem. Minor issues may not affect sound significantly. Major bearing edge damage will impact tuning and tone, and we can provide a quote for bearing edge restoration (starts at $90 per edge). You can approve or decline additional work - we never proceed without permission. If you decline edge work, we'll still complete the reskin as booked, though we'll explain how edge issues may affect performance.

Can I bring my own drum heads?

Yes, you're welcome to bring your own drum heads if you have specific preferences. Many customers already own heads they want installed. Just bring the heads with your drum when you drop it off, or ship them together for mail-in service. Make sure they're the correct size for your snare (typically 13" or 14"). If you're not sure what heads to get, we stock Evans coated heads and our technician can recommend the best option for your needs.

Will my drum be tuned after the reskin?

Yes, we perform initial tuning as part of the service to get you started. This includes proper head seating with even tension distribution and basic tuning to a reasonable pitch. However, final tuning to your exact taste should be done at home - every drummer has different preferences for snare tone (tight/crisp vs. loose/fat, high vs. low pitch). We recommend letting new heads settle for 24 hours, then fine-tuning to your preference. Our technician can provide tuning guidance if needed.

Do you reskin vintage or rare snare drums?

Yes, our drum technician has extensive experience with vintage snare drums from the 1950s through present, including Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers, Gretsch, and other classic brands. We take extra care with vintage drums, checking bearing edges carefully and using appropriate techniques for older shells. We can discuss whether original-style heads or modern equivalents are best for your vintage drum. We also work on custom boutique drums and rare models.

Is it cheaper to do both heads at once?

Yes, there's a small discount for doing both heads together. Single head reskin is $85, but both heads together is only $125 (saves $45). For mail-in service, single head is $120 and both heads is $160. Most drummers replace both batter and resonant heads at the same time since they wear at similar rates and having mismatched head ages can affect tone. However, if your resonant head is still in good condition, you can certainly do just the batter head.

What brands of drums do you service?

We reskin snare drums from all major manufacturers including Pearl, Yamaha, Tama, Ludwig, DW, PDP, Gretsch, Mapex, Sonor, Rogers, Slingerland, Premier, Dixon, and custom boutique brands. Our technician has experience with wood shells (maple, birch, mahogany), metal shells (steel, brass, aluminum, bronze), and acrylic shells across all price points from student models to professional and vintage drums. If you have an unusual drum or are unsure, call us and we can confirm compatibility.
