Superior Tonewoods — Graded for the Advancing Student
The step up from Gliga III to Gliga II begins in the timber selection. All wood received into the Gliga workshop is independently graded and allocated to each craftsperson before building begins. Wood graded for Gliga II instruments starts to show tighter grain on the spruce top for better resonance, and the maple begins to exhibit attractive flame. These better grades of timber are allocated to more experienced makers in the workshop, who devote additional care to the carving and tuning of the plates.
The combination of better tonewood and extra care in construction gives the Gliga II a more pleasing tone when put into the hands of the intermediate student — a new freedom of expression that entry level instruments simply cannot provide.
- Solid Spruce Top: Light flame with superior tonewoods — tighter grain producing better resonance and more complex tonal response.
- Solid Maple Back, Neck and Sides: Solid maple throughout contributing to sustain, projection and tonal warmth.
- Hand Applied Dark Antique Oil Varnish: The distinctive dark antique finish is applied entirely by hand — giving this instrument a rich, aged visual character and allowing the wood to breathe acoustically in the way that traditional oil varnish does best.
- Inlaid Purfling: Meticulously inlaid by hand, not painted — protecting the instrument and adding to its refined appearance.
- Stradivari Pattern: Built to the world's most celebrated violin proportions, accurately scaled to 1/4 size.
Quality Fittings Throughout
- Ebony Swiss-style Pegs: Precisely adjusted for smooth, reliable tuning.
- Ebony Fingerboard: Genuine ebony for long-lasting durability and a professional feel.
- Ebony Teka Chinrest: Comfortable and elegantly finished.
- Wittner Ultralight Tailpiece with Built-in Adjusters: Fine tuning on all four strings — making precise tuning easy for younger players and their parents.
- Aubert No.5 Bridge: A quality bridge contributing directly to tone, response and projection.

Understanding Handmade Violin Craftsmanship
A handmade violin is not a factory-produced instrument turned out by computer-controlled machines to identical tolerances. It is a hand-built wooden instrument crafted by individual makers using traditional techniques that have changed little in centuries — and that is precisely what makes it special.
Gliga III, II and I series violins are built by hand in a traditional workshop environment. Each instrument is individual. Minor cosmetic variations are not defects. They are the hallmark of authentic handcraft and are entirely normal and expected. Here is what you may notice:
Varnish and Finish
The hand-applied dark antique oil varnish may have small surface variations — minor bumps, pits or areas of slightly uneven thickness. On dark antiqued models particularly, the hand-applied wear patterns and colour variations will be somewhat inconsistent across the instrument. This is intentional and characteristic of the antique finish — the depth and richness of the dark antiquing is achieved precisely because it is applied and worked by hand. Sanding these variations smooth would remove wood and compromise the structural integrity of the plates.
Corners, Edges and Purfling
Handmade instruments often have slightly thicker or more rounded corners and edges than the refined, thin edges of high-end Italian instruments. The inlaid purfling may show slight variations in consistency or precision. These characteristics are typical of hand production and do not affect the acoustic performance of the instrument.
The Scroll
The scroll is hand-carved — meaning each one is unique. Slight variations between individual instruments in the scroll's form are entirely normal and expected.
These minor cosmetic characteristics do not affect playability, tone or structural integrity in any way. They are evidence of traditional craftsmanship — not a reason for concern. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Dark Antique and standard Gliga II finishes?
The Dark Antique model features a deeper, richer dark antique oil varnish finish — giving the instrument a more dramatic aged appearance compared to the lighter honey or standard antique finishes of other Gliga II models. The timber grading, construction quality and fittings are identical across the Gliga II range. The choice between finishes is primarily aesthetic — different players respond differently to the visual character of the instrument, and the Dark Antique suits players who prefer a more dramatic, characterful appearance.
What level of student is the Gliga II Dark Antique 1/4 designed for?
The Gliga II Dark Antique 1/4 is designed for the advancing student aged approximately 5 to 7 who has progressed beyond their entry level instrument and whose teacher has recommended an upgrade to support continued development.
How does the Gliga II differ from the Gliga III at this size?
The Gliga II uses better graded timber with tighter grain spruce and more pronounced maple flame, is built by more experienced makers with additional care in plate carving and tuning, and includes Pirastro Violino strings rather than entry level strings. The Wittner Ultralight tailpiece with built-in adjusters on all four strings is also a practical upgrade. The result is a noticeably more responsive and expressive instrument.
I noticed some minor imperfections in the dark antique varnish — is this normal?
Yes — and on dark antique finishes especially, this is entirely expected. Please read the handmade craftsmanship section above. The depth and richness of the dark antiquing is achieved precisely because it is applied and worked by hand — the variations in colour, depth and wear pattern across the instrument are what give it character. These are not defects. They do not affect playability, tone or structural integrity in any way.
What are Pirastro Violino strings?
Pirastro Violino strings are a synthetic core string designed for advancing students. They offer significantly more tonal range and playability than entry level strings, allowing a developing player to explore tone colour, dynamics and expression in ways that basic strings do not permit.
When should my child move up to a 1/2 violin?
Most students move from 1/4 to 1/2 when their arm length reaches approximately 51cm or above, usually around age 7 to 8. We stock the Gliga II in larger sizes so the student can continue at the same quality level as they grow.
Can I try this violin in person before purchasing?
Yes. You are welcome to visit our Altona workshop at 4 Drake Boulevard, Altona. We recommend comparing the Dark Antique finish alongside other Gliga II models in person — the visual character of the dark antique finish is best appreciated in person.
