Superior Tonewoods — Graded for the Advancing Student
The step up from Gliga III to Gliga II begins in the timber selection. All wood received into the Gliga workshop is independently graded and allocated to each craftsperson before building begins. Wood graded for Gliga II instruments starts to show tighter grain on the spruce top for better resonance, and the maple begins to exhibit attractive flame. These better grades of timber are allocated to more experienced makers in the workshop, who devote additional care to the carving and tuning of the plates.
The result is a noticeably more responsive and expressive instrument — one that gives the advancing younger student the tonal freedom and dynamic range that entry level instruments simply cannot provide.
- Solid Spruce Top: Quality spruce with medium flame superior tonewoods — producing better resonance and tonal complexity than entry level timber.
- Solid Maple Back, Neck and Sides: Solid maple throughout — contributing to sustain, projection and tonal warmth.
- Hand Applied Antique Oil Varnish: Applied by hand following traditional methods — enhancing both visual character and acoustic resonance.
- Inlaid Purfling: Meticulously inlaid by hand, not painted — protecting the instrument and contributing to its refined appearance.
Quality Fittings Throughout
- Ebony Swiss-style Pegs: Precisely adjusted for smooth, reliable tuning.
- Ebony Fingerboard: Genuine ebony for long-lasting durability and a smooth, professional feel.
- Ebony Chinrest: Comfortable and durable.
- Wittner Tailpiece with Built-in Fine Tuners: Precise tuning adjustment — making it easy for a younger player and their parents to keep the instrument perfectly in tune.
- Aubert Bridge: A quality bridge contributing directly to tone, response and projection.

Understanding Handmade Violin Craftsmanship
A handmade violin is not a trumpet. It is not a factory-produced instrument turned out by computer-controlled machines to identical tolerances. It is a hand-built wooden instrument crafted by individual makers using traditional techniques that have changed little in centuries — and that is precisely what makes it special.
Gliga III, II and I series violins — including this instrument — are built by hand in a traditional workshop environment. This means each instrument is individual. Minor cosmetic variations are not defects. They are the hallmark of authentic handcraft and are entirely normal and expected. Here is what you may notice:
Varnish and Finish
The hand-applied oil varnish may have small surface variations — minor bumps, pits or areas of slightly uneven thickness. On antiqued models, the hand-applied wear patterns and colour variations will be somewhat inconsistent across the instrument. This is intentional and characteristic of the antique finish, not a fault. Sanding these variations smooth would remove wood and compromise the structural integrity of the plates.
Corners, Edges and Purfling
Handmade instruments often have slightly thicker or more rounded corners and edges than the refined, thin edges of high-end Italian instruments. The inlaid purfling may show slight variations in consistency or precision. These characteristics are typical of hand production and do not affect the acoustic performance of the instrument.
The Scroll
While the violin body may be shaped with some assistance from templates for consistency, the scroll is hand-carved — meaning each one is unique. Slight variations between individual instruments in the scroll's form are entirely normal and expected.
These minor cosmetic characteristics do not affect playability, tone or structural integrity in any way. They are evidence of traditional craftsmanship — not a reason for concern. If you have any questions about a specific instrument, you are welcome to contact us or visit our Altona showroom to inspect it in person before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What level of student is the Gliga II 1/4 designed for?
The Gliga II 1/4 is designed for the advancing student who has progressed beyond their entry level instrument and whose teacher has recommended an upgrade to support continued development. At 1/4 size this typically means a student aged approximately 5 to 7 who has been playing for one to two years and is developing bow technique and tonal awareness.
How does the Gliga II differ from the Gliga III at this size?
The key differences are timber grading, craftsmanship and strings. Gliga II instruments use independently graded wood with better resonance characteristics, are built by more experienced makers with additional care in carving and tuning the plates, and include Pirastro Violino strings rather than the Opal strings of the Gliga III. The Wittner tailpiece with built-in fine tuners on all strings is also a practical upgrade. The result is a noticeably more responsive and expressive instrument.
What are Pirastro Violino strings and why do they matter?
Pirastro Violino strings are a synthetic core string designed for advancing students. They offer significantly more tonal range and playability than entry level strings — allowing a developing player to begin exploring tone colour, dynamics and expression in ways that basic strings do not permit. The difference is clearly audible and clearly felt by both the student and their teacher.
I noticed some minor imperfections on the varnish — is this normal?
Yes — completely normal and expected. Please read the handmade craftsmanship section above. Gliga instruments are hand-built using traditional techniques. Minor varnish variations, slightly uneven antiquing and small surface characteristics are the hallmark of authentic handcraft, not manufacturing defects. They do not affect playability, tone or structural integrity in any way.
Is this suitable for a Suzuki student?
Yes. The Gliga II 1/4 is well suited to Suzuki students at this size who have progressed through the early books and are ready for an instrument that matches their developing musical ear. Many Suzuki teachers specifically recommend upgrading to a Gliga II level instrument at this stage of development.
When should my child move up to a 1/2 violin?
Most students move from 1/4 to 1/2 when their arm length reaches approximately 51cm or above, usually around age 7 to 8. We stock the Gliga II in larger sizes as well as the full Gliga III range — so as your child grows they can continue at the same quality level. Contact us for advice on timing the transition.
Can I try this violin in person before purchasing?
Yes. You are welcome to visit us at our Altona workshop at 4 Drake Boulevard, Altona. We recommend comparing the Gliga II 1/4 alongside the Gliga III 1/4 in person — the tonal and playability difference is immediately noticeable and helps confirm the upgrade decision for both parents and students.
