Gliga II Genova 4/4 Violin Outfit - Intermediate Handcrafted Quality & Expert Setup
The Gliga II Genova represents a meaningful step forward from entry-level student instruments — a violin built for the advancing player who has outgrown their beginner outfit and is ready for an instrument that rewards growing technique with a more expressive and responsive sound. Handcrafted in Romania from superior graded tonewoods, the Genova combines tighter grain spruce, attractively flamed maple and a shaded honey finish that whispers to an old Italian tradition. This is an instrument of genuine character and beauty.

Superior Tonewoods — Graded for the Intermediate Player
The distinction between the Gliga III and Gliga II begins in the timber yard. All wood received into the Gliga workshop is independently graded before a single instrument is built. Wood allocated to Gliga II instruments starts to show tighter grain on the spruce top for better resonance, and the maple begins to exhibit the attractive flame that marks a more premium instrument. These better grades of timber are given to Gliga's more experienced craftspeople, who apply additional care to the carving and tuning of the plates.
- Tighter Grain Spruce Top: Tighter annual rings in the spruce produce better resonance and more complex tonal response — a direct acoustic benefit over wider-grained student timber.
- Flamed Maple Back, Neck and Sides: The attractive flame in the maple is not merely cosmetic — it indicates denser, more consistent wood structure that contributes to sustain and projection.
- Hand Applied Antiqued Italian Oil Varnish: The shaded honey finish is applied by hand following traditional Italian varnishing methods, enhancing both the visual character and the acoustic resonance of the instrument.
- Inlaid Purfling: Meticulously inlaid by hand — not painted — both protecting the instrument and adding to its refined aesthetic.
- Stradivari Pattern: Built to the proportions of the world's most celebrated violin design for balanced projection and tonal evenness across all four strings.
Matched Flamed Maple Fittings
The Genova's fittings reflect the increasing accomplishment of its player. Matched flamed maple pegs, chinrest and traditional wooden tailpiece with gold adjusters create a cohesive, elegant appearance that befits performance in the recital hall.
- Flamed Maple Pegs: Matched to the body flame for a unified, professional appearance.
- Flamed Maple Teka Chinrest: Comfortable and elegantly matched to the instrument's finish.
- Flamed Maple Tailpiece with Gold Adjusters: Traditional wooden tailpiece with gold fine tuners on the A and E strings for precise, easy tuning.
- Ebony Fingerboard: Genuine ebony for long-lasting durability and a smooth, professional feel under the fingers.
- Aubert Maple Bridge: A quality bridge that contributes directly to the instrument's tone and response.
Pirastro Violino Strings — A Meaningful Upgrade
The choice of Pirastro Violino strings for the Gliga II range is deliberate and significant. The Violino is a synthetic core string specifically designed for advancing students — known for its easy playability and its ability to allow players to explore a wider range of tonal colour than entry level strings permit. For a student who is developing their bow technique and beginning to work on tone production, the difference between entry level strings and Pirastro Violino is immediately and meaningfully audible.
Complete Intermediate Outfit
This violin is supplied as a complete outfit ready for lessons and performance.
- Articul II Fibreglass Bow: The full size Genova outfit includes the Articul II fibreglass bow — a significant step up from the brazilwood student bows supplied with entry level instruments. Fibreglass offers excellent consistency of flex and response for the advancing player.
- TG Oblong Hill Style Lightweight Case: A quality oblong case in the classic Hill style — protective, well-structured and suitable for the serious student.
- Pirastro Violino Strings: Fitted as standard — no need to immediately upgrade strings as with many outfits at this level.

Frequently Asked Questions
What level of player is the Gliga II Genova suitable for?
The Gliga II Genova is designed for the intermediate student who has progressed beyond their first instrument and is ready for a violin that responds to developing technique with greater tonal expressiveness. It is suitable for students who have been playing for approximately two to four years and are working on tone production, bow technique and musical expression. It is also an excellent choice for adult beginners who want to start on a quality instrument rather than an entry level model.
How does the Gliga II differ from the Gliga III?
The key difference is in the timber grading and craftsmanship. Gliga II instruments use wood with tighter grain spruce and more pronounced maple flame — both of which contribute directly to better resonance and tonal complexity. The Gliga II instruments are also given to more experienced makers in the workshop, with additional time devoted to carving and tuning the plates. The result is a noticeably more responsive and expressive instrument. The Gliga II also includes Pirastro Violino strings and a fibreglass Articul II bow rather than the brazilwood bow supplied with the Gliga III.
What are Pirastro Violino strings and why do they matter?
Pirastro Violino strings are a synthetic core string designed specifically for advancing students. They offer significantly more tonal range and playability than the entry level strings fitted to most student instruments — allowing a developing player to begin exploring tone colour, dynamics and expression in a way that basic strings do not permit. Fitting quality strings to a quality instrument is one of the most meaningful upgrades an intermediate student can make.
Is the workshop setup included or does it cost extra?
The expert workshop setup is included in the price at no extra charge. Every Gliga II Genova at Angkor Music is set up before dispatch — French Aubert bridge fitted, Pirastro strings installed, pegs adjusted. The instrument arrives ready to play. For online orders please allow 2 to 3 days for setup prior to dispatch.
Can I try this violin before purchasing?
Yes. We have a selection of Gliga II violins available at our Altona Melbourne showroom. For an instrument at this level we strongly encourage players to visit in person — the difference between individual instruments in tonal character and response is meaningful and worth experiencing before purchase.
What bow is included with this outfit?
The full size 4/4 Genova outfit includes the Articul II fibreglass bow — a significant step up from the brazilwood student bows supplied with entry level instruments. Fibreglass offers excellent consistency of flex and a more reliable response for the advancing student working on bow technique.
What case is included?
This outfit includes the TG oblong Hill style lightweight case — a quality, well-structured case in the classic Hill style that provides good protection for an instrument of this calibre. It is suitable for regular transport to lessons, rehearsals and performances.
