Maggini vs Stradivari — Understanding the Two Great Patterns

Most violins — including the majority of Gliga's range — are built on the Stradivari pattern, following the proportions established by Antonio Stradivari of Cremona in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The Stradivari pattern produces a violin with a slightly narrower waist, shallower ribs and a focused, brilliant tonal character. It is the dominant pattern in modern violin making for good reason — it is extraordinarily well balanced and widely versatile.

Giovanni Paolo Maggini was a maker from Brescia working slightly earlier than Stradivari — active in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The Maggini pattern is characterised by a slightly larger, fuller body with deeper ribs and a broader lower bout. Maggini's instruments are also traditionally distinguished by their double purfling — two parallel inlaid lines running around the perimeter of the instrument rather than the single line of the Stradivari pattern. This double purfling is the most visually distinctive feature of the Maggini tradition and the detail that defines this Gliga I model.

Tonally, instruments built on the Maggini pattern tend to produce a slightly fuller, warmer, more powerful sound with a broad, rich character — qualities that complement the playing style of many orchestral players and soloists. The differences are subtle at the Gliga I level but the double purfling gives this instrument a genuine individuality and historical connection that standard pattern violins do not have.

An important note on the scroll: The original Maggini violins featured a distinctive double-turned scroll. This Gliga I Maggini uses a standard scroll — the double purfling is the primary Maggini-inspired detail. This is a deliberate choice by Gliga to honour the Maggini tradition in its most acoustically and visually significant element while maintaining the playability and familiarity of a conventional scroll.

Gliga I — The Finest Timber, The Most Experienced Hands

In the Gliga workshop, it is only the most experienced builders who work with the higher grades of wood selected for Gliga I instruments. These expert craftspeople draw on decades of knowledge as they graduate the plates with precision and artfully tune them — a process that takes years to master and cannot be rushed or replicated by machine.

  • Fine Straight Grain Spruce Top: The finest straight-grained spruce selected for Gliga I instruments produces exceptional resonance and tonal complexity. Crucially, fine straight grain spruce continues to age — the sound literally opens up the more the instrument is played, becoming richer and more responsive over years of regular use. These violins deserve to be played often and well.
  • Striking Flamed Maple Back, Neck and Sides: The book-matched flamed maple back exhibits striking figure, matched to the solid maple ribs. The flame indicates dense, consistent wood structure that contributes to sustain, projection and tonal warmth — and creates a visually stunning instrument.
  • Inlaid Double Purfling: The defining feature of the Maggini tradition. Two parallel lines of inlaid purfling run around the perimeter of the instrument — a more complex, time-consuming process than single purfling and a subtle but unmistakeable nod to the old master's style.
  • Hand Applied Antique Oil Varnish: The traditional oil varnish is carefully hand applied so as not to hinder the instrument acoustically — allowing the wood to vibrate freely while protecting it and giving the instrument its warm, aged visual character.

Premium Fittings Throughout

  • Ebony Swiss-style Pegs: Precisely adjusted for smooth, reliable tuning.
  • Ebony Fingerboard: Genuine ebony for long-lasting durability and a professional feel.
  • Ebony Teka Chinrest: Comfortable and elegantly finished.
  • Wittner Ultralight Tailpiece with Built-in Adjusters: Chosen specifically for its light weight, stability and ease of precise tuning — all four strings have built-in fine tuners.
  • Aubert Bridge: A quality bridge contributing directly to tone, response and projection. Your luthier may recommend upgrading to a European aged maple bridge depending on your requirements.

Opal Gold Strings and String Upgrade Options

This instrument is fitted with Opal Gold strings as standard — a quality synthetic string that suits the Gliga I well. As the player develops and the instrument opens up with playing, your teacher may recommend upgrading to Pirastro Violino, Pirastro Obligato, Evah Pirazzi, or Jargar Superior strings depending on your tonal goals and playing style. All of these are available at Angkor Music and our team is happy to advise on the best choice for your instrument and level.

Premium Outfit

  • Articul Carbon Fibre Bow with Ebony Frog and Horsehair: The Gliga I outfit includes the Articul carbon fibre bow — a premium step up from brazilwood student bows. Carbon fibre offers exceptional consistency of flex and response, is extremely durable and performs reliably across a wide range of temperatures and humidity levels. This is a bow worthy of this instrument.
  • HQ Half-Moon Case: A premium HQ brand half-moon case — well-constructed, protective and elegant. A fitting case for an instrument of this calibre.

Please Note: Online orders — please allow 2 to 3 days for expert workshop setup prior to dispatch. As these instruments are handcrafted from natural wood, the colour, grain and flame pattern will vary slightly between individual violins, while maintaining the same high standard of quality.

Understanding Handmade Violin Craftsmanship

A handmade violin is not a factory-produced instrument turned out by computer-controlled machines to identical tolerances. It is a hand-built wooden instrument crafted by individual makers using traditional techniques that have changed little in centuries — and that is precisely what makes it special.

Gliga I instruments are built by the most experienced makers in the workshop. Each instrument is individual. Minor cosmetic variations are not defects — they are the hallmark of authentic handcraft and are entirely normal and expected at every price point in the Gliga range. Here is what you may notice:

Varnish and Finish

The hand-applied antique oil varnish may have small surface variations — minor bumps, pits or areas of slightly uneven thickness. These are natural blemishes in the wood or varnish that were deliberately preserved to maintain the structural integrity and thickness of the plates. Sanding them smooth would compromise the acoustic performance of the instrument.

Double Purfling

The double purfling on the Maggini model is inlaid by hand — a more complex and time-consuming process than single purfling. Slight variations in the consistency and precision of the double purfling lines are characteristic of hand inlaying and entirely normal. They do not affect the acoustic or structural integrity of the instrument.

Corners, Edges and Scroll

Handmade instruments may have slightly thicker or more rounded corners and edges than the refined finishes of high-end Italian instruments. The scroll is hand-carved and unique to each instrument. These are characteristics of traditional handcraft, not flaws.

These minor cosmetic characteristics do not affect playability, tone or structural integrity in any way. If you have any questions about a specific instrument, you are welcome to contact us or visit our Altona workshop at 4 Drake Boulevard before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Maggini pattern and a Stradivari pattern violin?
The Stradivari pattern — used for the majority of modern violins — was established by Antonio Stradivari of Cremona in the late 17th century. It produces a violin with a slightly narrower waist, shallower ribs and a focused, brilliant tonal character. The Maggini pattern, developed by Giovanni Paolo Maggini of Brescia in the late 16th century, features a slightly larger, fuller body with deeper ribs and broader proportions — producing a somewhat fuller, warmer and more powerful sound. Maggini's instruments are also traditionally distinguished by double purfling — two parallel inlaid lines rather than the single purfling of the Stradivari tradition. This Gliga I model honours that double purfling tradition.

Does the Gliga I Maggini have the double-turned scroll of the original Maggini violins?
No. While the original Maggini instruments featured a distinctive double-turned scroll, this Gliga I Maggini uses a conventional single scroll. The double purfling is the primary Maggini-inspired feature. Gliga made this deliberate choice to honour the most acoustically and visually significant element of the Maggini tradition while maintaining the playability and familiarity of a conventional scroll.

What makes the Gliga I different from the Gliga II?
The Gliga I represents the highest tier of Gliga's student and intermediate range. It is built exclusively by the most experienced makers in the workshop using the finest grades of timber selected for Gliga I — fine straight grain spruce and striking flamed maple. The plate graduation and tuning process at Gliga I level involves greater precision and more time than the Gliga II, and the result is a noticeably richer, more complex and more responsive instrument. The Gliga I also includes a carbon fibre Articul bow and premium HQ half-moon case rather than the brazilwood bow and Hill-style case of the Gliga II.

What does it mean that the spruce top will open up with playing?
Fine straight grain spruce is a living material — even after being made into a violin, the cellular structure continues to respond to vibration over time. Regular playing causes the wood fibres to align and resonate more efficiently, producing a gradually richer and more complex tonal character. This process, known as playing the instrument in, means a well-made violin with quality spruce will sound noticeably better after years of regular playing than it did when new. The Gliga I Maggini deserves to be played often and well.

What string upgrades would you recommend?
The instrument is fitted with Opal Gold strings as standard. As the player develops and the instrument opens up, your teacher may recommend upgrading to Pirastro Violino, Pirastro Obligato, Pirastro Evah Pirazzi or Jargar Superior depending on your tonal goals. All are available at Angkor Music and our team is happy to advise on the best choice for your instrument and playing style.

What is the Articul carbon fibre bow?
The Articul carbon fibre bow is a significant step up from the brazilwood bows supplied with lower level outfits. Carbon fibre offers exceptional consistency of flex and response, is extremely durable and performs reliably across a wide range of temperatures and humidity — making it an excellent choice for regular playing and performance. It is a bow worthy of the Gliga I instrument it accompanies.

I noticed some minor imperfections in the varnish or double purfling — is this normal?
Yes — completely normal and expected. Please read the handmade craftsmanship section above. Gliga I instruments are hand-built by the most experienced makers in the workshop. Minor varnish variations and slight inconsistencies in the double purfling lines are the hallmark of authentic hand inlaying and handcraft. They do not affect playability, tone or structural integrity in any way.

Can I try this violin in person before purchasing?
Yes. You are welcome to visit our Altona workshop at 4 Drake Boulevard, Altona. For an instrument of this calibre we strongly recommend visiting in person — the tonal character, visual beauty and feel of the Gliga I Maggini is best appreciated when you are holding and playing it.
